Statement of Significance (as of September 9, 2008):
During a summer vacation in 2004 to the states of Connecticut and Rhode Island, I had made the plan to spend an entire day on Block Island in the Atlantic Ocean, accessible by passenger ferry from the town of Galilee. I parked my car on the mainland and took the ferry onto the island, which under cloudy skies on June 14, 2004, seemed rather gloomy. My main reason for going to Block Island was to see the 2 lighthouses: one on the northern tip and the other in the southeastern corner. Since the island measures 6 miles from northern to southern end, that meant that I would need to get a moped to see both, but since I left my driver's license in my car on the mainland, I was unable to rent a moped and had to settle for a mountain bicycle, which made the trek across the island and back very tiring since the island is hilly. It was rather quiet on the island that day, most likely due to the clouds and eventual rain that afternoon, so seeing the lighthouses and walking around the business district on Water Street was very much a memorable experience. I felt like I had the island all to myself for most of the 5 hours that I ended up spending on the island.
