Located along the Gulf of Mexico and at the very southern end of Louisiana Highway 1, Grand Isle is a very popular weekend trip destination for residents of southern Louisiana. Famous for its great fishing and its state park (which has one of only a handful of beaches in Louisiana), Grand Isle offers a relaxing small-town atmosphere that's perfect to spend those lazy free days. (That is, whenever there is no hurricane in the gulf!)
Speaking of hurricanes: like the rest of southeastern Louisiana, Grand Isle suffered damage from Hurricane Katrina back in 2005, but thankfully there wasn't tremendous damage and recovery has been going on.

The isle gained minor national popularity when it became the setting for the 1992 drama "Grand Isle", a cinematic rendition of Kate Chopin's novel "The Awakening" starring Kelly McGillis (Tom Cruise's co-star in Top Gun).

The map of Grand Isle used as the map for Pike's Isle is from a map of the south Lafourche parish area, available from the South Lafourche Chamber of Commerce (in Cut Off, LA) and produced by Mosher-Adams, Inc. (production office: Oklahoma City, OK).

So why did I design my site as a replica of Grand Isle, especially since I don't live there, much less that I don't live in Louisiana anymore? Because it was one of my favorite places to visit, it was something I wanted to remember about from my time living in Louisiana, and also because it's a very little-known island city to those outside of Louisiana. However, it could be compared to the better-known island city of Key West, FL: it's very much out of the way and takes a while to drive to... but once you get there, you realize the drive was worth it!
